JASMINEGOLD deliver expressive debut LP, ‘Serpent’
North Florida duo JASMINEGOLD have dropped off their debut LP Serpent. Across 13 tracks, the expansive, vibrant project finds them experimenting with an engaging variety of sounds. Never settling in one groove or one box, the excitingly dynamic project finds the group exploring stylistically with no bounds. Group members David Nights and KJ share a natural chemistry across the track listing, as they weave together immersive abstract hip-hop soundscapes that keep the listener on their toes throughout.
From the get-go, JASMINEGOLD’s eclectic production and charismatic, focused rhymes are on display. Opening song “Modern Love Story” is colorful and dense, yet simultaneously makes for a butter smooth listen that soothes with its elegant strings and rich 808s. “Broadcast”, one of my personal favorites on the project, provides replay value while remaining boundary-pushing, utilizing chopped, abstract samples to create an enticingly psychedelic sound. “Contraband” makes for a mind-expanding track, and is one of the more left-field offerings on the LP, with clanging, off-kilter drums and heavy, driving 808s underscoring abrasive samples built into a sound collage of sorts. “Backseat Driver” showcases the duo’s diverse songwriting, with slower, nostalgic production that makes for a laid-back summer soundtrack. Closer “A Happy Endin” makes for an album highlight with its grand, thought-provoking sound and potent, socially-conscious lyricism that feels poignant throughout.
Speaking on Serpent, JASMINEGOLD say, “This album sounds like JASMINEGOLD. We don’t like being complacent, and this is the groundwork for that. We want to sound like nothing you’ve heard before and innovate.”
