Margot Liotta’s “Green Bottle” Has Us Crying on the Train

“What the f*ck are you looking at?” The first line of Margot Liotta’s latest single captures our attention. But don’t let this harsh opening fool you: “Green Bottle” is a soft, whimsical ballad echoing the likes of Dodie or Adrianne Lenker. Right after, she sets a scene: “Haven’t you ever seen someone crying on the train before?”

With her scrapbook and sticker art aesthetic, Liotta embodies her experimental pop sound and vulnerable, heartfelt lyrics like something straight from a teenage diary. The message of “Green Bottle” is of understanding, but not necessarily acceptance: There’s heartache despite the self-awareness. Liotta promoted the song on TikTok using a sound starting “What do I got? I got the same four chords and a carton of orange juice.”

The song takes listeners along on this not-so-ordinary train ride, with groceries in our laps and pictures of an unrequited love running through our minds. As Liotta puts it, “Breaking down is so easy when you’re on the green line.”
