Sydney Ross Mitchell’s “Porn Star” Is Painfully Real

If Olivia Rodrigo represents the heartaches of late teendom, Sydney Ross Mitchell speaks to 20-somethings, detailing break-ups, unrequited love, and “situationships” in a more MA-rated fashion. On “Porn Star,” her first release of the new year, Mitchell expresses a provocative vulnerability every artist should strive to achieve. Her voice echoes the whispery likes of Phoebe Bridgers and Lizzy McAlpine as she addresses a past lover who has moved on, wishing his new lover is “easy to love, and nothing like me.” The cover art for “Porn Star” not only highlights its vulnerability, but demonstrates Mitchell’s dedication to the song as she expands on the story through visuals.

“Porn Star,” released just last week, comes four months after Mitchell’s other recent single “The Edge.” Both tracks highlight Mitchell’s skillful songwriting, as her lyrics earned her 29.7K TikTok followers
