An Interview with Big Snow

Dami: What was your first introduction to music?

Big Snow: My first introduction to music was around age 4, when I got into my parents CD’s and cassette tapes, and I’ve loved music since then. I decided I wanted to rap after my cousin put me on to Eminem, from where I began to freestyle to myself, study the greats like Snoop Dogg, Kanye West and Slick Rick, and mess around with beats on GarageBand.

Dami: Who would you say influenced your sound greatly?

Big Snow: I would say that Eminem, Daft Punk, Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, Lil Uzi Vert and Westside Gunn are the biggest influences on my sound.

Dami: How would you describe your sound?

Big Snow: It’s hard to think of a single descriptor of my sound. I take influence from the sounds of boom bap, trap, drill, rock and roll and electronic music and turn it into one sound, with elements of trap being heard over my boom bap style tracks and vice versa.

Dami: How do you manage combining all these different sounds when making music?

Big Snow: I find these combinations can come from many different places, be it in the beat I’m using, or if I decide to use auto-tune or not, and what flows I decide to use for a certain part of the song. I’ve spent a lot of time listening to different genres of music, so when it comes time for me to make a song, I am able to figure out a flow or vocal style that I’ve heard before, and bring in different flows and styles to keep things interesting.

Dami: When making music, where do you grab inspiration from?

Big Snow: Most things. I often grab inspiration from music I like, movies, TV shows, video games, my own life experiences, as well as nature and places I’ve travelled to.

Dami: You dropped a new single “10/31 Again”. Tell us more about it?

Big Snow: For this series, the process started after I went to watch Halloween Kills in theatres. “10/31 Freestyle” was released on SoundCloud previously, so I re-made the beat, kept the lyrics I had from the original version and added a new verse. From there, my friend suggested I make one Halloween themed song each year. The lyrical process for this song was mostly re-capping the events described in 10/31 Freestyle and what’s happened since then.

Dami: What’s next after “10/31 Again”?

Big Snow: I’m gearing up for an album release in early 2024. I’ve been planning this album for nearly 5 years now and it’s become an entirely different project from when I first conceived it. It’s going to be a concept album like my last full-length release, with self-love/acceptance being the main theme of the album.

Dami: What should we expect from the album?

Big Snow: Can’t say too much about this quite yet, but sound wise it’s going to be mostly trap with a couple boom bap tracks. It’s going to have the theme as previously mentioned, which will be tied together by skits. This album will play out like a musical or auditory movie. I should also add that when I picked out beats for this album, it was around 2019-2020 so the sound will be reflective of the “end of the SoundCloud era” trap sound.

Dami: With the year coming to an end, what should we expect from you come 2024?

Big Snow: I’ve been saying over my social media platforms that Big Snow fans will feast in 2024. This year will go down as a pivotal year in the book of Big Snow, and I’m going to expand on what I’ve done this year in the next. With the album I was talking about earlier, I plan to release a couple more projects throughout 2024, and of course I will grow my following to get more people talking about Big Snow.

Dami: What are 3 words you’ll use to describe these albums?

Big Snow: For this upcoming one: solidified, acceptance, movie.
