An Interview with hxllfye

Dami: What inspired you to start making music professionally?

Hxllfye: Well to be honest, my friend SevvX7 pretty much inspired me to do rapping and singing. I started off with making beats with loops on bandlab and other apps, then like 5-6 months later me and him had an idea for a collab tape and a month after that I started rapping. What made me pick my sound i got right now was mainly Ken. i was listening to him around his blow up year, also Kashdami inspired me and Brockhampton.

Dami: How would you describe your sound?

Hxllfye: In the beginning, definitely a Iann Dior sound. A few months later, a phonk sound. A few months after that would be the start of a Ken Carson/Homixide Gang sound. Right now, my sound is a mix of my own stuff which would be loud 808 fast hihat dark melodies and also some similarities to Osamason, Lifelessgarments, and Zodiak.

Dami: How much would you say you’ve grown artistically since your debut?

Hxllfye: I definitely grew a lot. I started off everything in Bandlab and after my debut, i went to FL studio. I also took in inspirations from my own sound and beat choices into making my own beats similar to those sounds. I also grew a lot as in having connections to different producers and artists who have sound similar to mine.

Dami: How was the transition like from making beats to actually rapping on them?

Hxllfye: The transition wasnt hard to be honest. I had SevvX7 who already rapped so he helped me a lot with it. The only thing that was sort of hard to do was the mixing and the occasional writers block.

Dami: How do you deal with writers block?

Hxllfye: I just take a break for no longer than a month, watch shows or movies, play games, listen to other rappers, and then usually by the end of that I’ll have a lot of inspirations for a song or more.

Dami: When making music, where do you grab inspiration from?

Hxllfye: I grab it from anyone really. Mainly, it’s just other rappers i like or just anything i like.

Dami: What’s your creative process like?

Hxllfye: For everything, I just think of what I want to do and just push my way to that goal. Everything in my path is just a obstacle that i can easily get past if i think hard enough about it. This also goes the same for music. I think of what I want to make and make my way to it. So basically, think of what I wanna do, yolo my way to it.

Dami: You recently dropped a single titled Skejk. Can you tell us more about it?

Hxllfye: Like most of my songs, I recorded late at night, tired asf feeling high even though I wasn’t  and I was just looking for beats because I wanted to record and I found that shit, found the flow immediately and i had to record if not I’d forget. But the name of the song was supposed to be Sike Jk but I was so tired that i thought i pressed "i" in sike and the space but the next morning i found out i didnt but the name skejk seemed unique so i kept it that way. Song has really no meaning at all except for me just trolling a girl for fun cause i troll a lot. I might be narcoleptic ngl

Dami: What’s next after this single?

Hxllfye: Most likely just release some random songs all different sounds, explore my horizons type shit. I do have a collab EP with SevvX7 that we recorded here in my room so the energy unmatched. We’re calling it X-Rated because we both got X in our names. Apart from that, imma release a single for all platforms next month thats out on soundcloud right now it’s called "fatbiches".

Dami: Can you tell us more about this collab EP?

Hxllfye: Well me and NSC which is a group I’m a part of have a "wheel of type beats" that we use for song wars. But when SevvX7 was here, we were using it to record on any type of beat. Like we'd spin the wheel and whatever it landed on, we use. X-Rated will be many different beats so it wont just be repetitive.

Dami: What 3 words would you use to describe this EP?

Hxllfye: Versatile, hype, and different.

Dami: How did the NSC collective come along?

Hxllfye: It started off with just SevvX7 making it for his own, then he later on asked me and other friends to join it, we did. It’s about being serious in what our career is whether its music, clothes, anything else it doesnt matter as long as we are serious in it. But when it started, it was just us 4 until May It invited more people such as NeuCore and Miso. NSC is now beginning to grow and we hope it continues for years to come. What we all know is that NSC will be the next biggest music group and NSC stands for Night Send Crew, cause no matter what time it is, we always do what we want and we dont care what other people say.

Dami: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hxllfye: I see myself making a big name for me and NSC in Vegas. In Vegas, there’s been a few artists that been known here such as Elvis, Panic at the Disco, Imagine Dragons and Baby Keem. Apart from them, there hasn’t been HUGE names here. I want to be the next one from Vegas. Especially with my sound, I want to popularize that here.

Dami: How’s it been like pushing your music to a larger audience?

Hxllfye: It’s been way different than what i'm used to but its fun not gonna lie. I like seeing the number on the plays go up, gives me hope for me and NSC. Especially that i know most people do music for the money and not for the love, but for all my life I’ve been doing music. I played drums when i was little, played guitar, always liked different sounds; I grew up on it really.
