An Interview with Selfmade Wave
Dami: What inspired you to start making music?
Selfmade Wave: Others artists that I went to school with in the past were breaking out and making their mark with sounds authentic to them. It inspired me to chase what I’ve always wanted to do and make music that was true to me and my life.
Dami: What was your first introduction to music?
Selfmade Wave: Fresh out of high school, me and all my guys put in for an Abletom Daws on my guy’s laptop. No autotune, no preset lol just raw vocals on a party city mic and we all hated what we heard so we left it alone. But during Covid, I just had this urge to record a breakup song and I wasn’t sure how it would sound so I just booked a random studio with decent engineers to hopefully get the sound I wanted. From then on, I got addicted to the process of making music and becoming a better artist.
Dami: How much would you say you’ve grown since this debut?
Selfmade Wave: Exponentially bro. I think I’ve finally found what works for me on my upcoming project.
Dami: Care to share?
Selfmade Wave: I’m workin on a project with more ambient and spacy sounds that fit my way of writing.
Dami: What inspired this project?
Selfmade Wave: I’ve been locked in with the same engineer pretty much in the dojo every week when I’m not recording on my own. Sometime when we first started working together, I found underground music and became obsessed with mixing that sound with my way of writing and with my own melodies. From May to now still, I’m wrapping up this project that focuses on more ambient trap sounds that’s still true to me.
Dami: What should we expect from this upcoming project?
Selfmade Wave: More of a deep dive into me as a person with spacy, ambient production that should be easy to connect with for new ears to Wave as an artist.
Dami: How would you describe your current sound?
Selfmade Wave: UntilJapan & Swapa esque with a Smino & André 3000 influence
Dami: When making music, where do you grab inspiration from?
Selfmade Wave: My real life current events. I’m from Compton for real and no one comes from where I come from without a story to tell. Whatever is going on in my life at that given time is what I put in my raps.
Dami: What’s your creative process like?
Selfmade Wave: It depends honestly bro, but I’ll either find a loop or my engineer would have a loop ready and I’ll write to the loop. After I write, I might smoke and find the melody and get to recording what I have.
Dami: Who are your biggest inspirations?
Selfmade Wave: Andre 3000, Smino, new Yachty, Jordan Ward, Tyler the Creator,
Brent Faiyaz, Joony, and Mike. All have inspired me in some way to become a better artist.
Dami: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
Selfmade Wave: Hopefully signed to a label that believes in what I can do and making music true to me
