Fatboyshaun and Ricky Mapes share new collaborative EP ‘Evil Twin’
Texas artist Fatboyshaun and New York’s Ricky Mapes have linked for a new collaborative EP called Evil Twin. Here, they reunite for a small family reunion, showcasing natural chemistry as they weave together effortless, charismatic verses atop gritty production from Cuffedgod, Micro, and more.
You genuinely have no clue which of the two are the “evil twin” as both have a specific demeanor of style and subject they approach each track distinctly. Right from the get-go, you can get a sense for the rappers’ chemistry as “Evil Twin”, produced by Cuffedgod, effectively finds them trading off vivid verses atop textural, hypnotic samples that blend with infectious drums and rich bass. “$5 Advil”, produced by Micro, brings in moody horns and layered keys to create a jazzy soundscape for the rappers’ engaging verses. Tracks like “Grimm Carey” bring in a different sound, with an abstract beat from GRIMM Doza that complements their verses. Closer “Zoo York” is calming and reflective, with airy keys and light percussion bringing out more introspective lyrical content from the duo. A poignant closer, “Zoo York” finds them delivering vibrant verses full of detail.
The latest from Fatboyshaun and Ricky Mapes, Evil Twin finds them delivering imagery-rich verses atop smooth, hazy production from GRIMM Doza, Cuffedgod, Micro and more. Here, they create the space for the listener to not only relate to or understand the perspective of Evil Twin- but also to contemplate whether or not they themselves are a long-lost evil twin.
