MX Lonely Spearheads the Brooklyn Alt Scene with “SPIT”
Brooklyn's own MX Lonely just dropped their latest EP, "SPIT," under the label Candlepin Records. Following up on their 2022 album "Cadonia," “SPIT” demonstrates the band's ongoing exploration of the raw human experience with grungy, heavy alternative guitars.
Noting a change from their previous project, lead singer Jake Harms shares the vocal spotlight with Rae Haas, whose restrained voice adds an edge of angst and dimension to the 5-track EP. Written during the fall of 2022, ‘SPIT’ showcases MX Lonely’s knack for perfectly depicting the unfiltered human condition and everything that comes with it. "SPIT" delves into themes of existential dread and the struggle against inertia, with tracks like "Rest in Salt” exploring the sensation of being trapped in a state of limbo, consumed by anxiety and longing for release. In the band’s own words, “‘Rest in Salt’ is about being ridden with anxiety and stuck to the couch. It’s that feeling of jealousy for the dead and the twinge of guilt that follows. When you lie so still you think you can almost remember the freedom of being nothing at all.”
Interestingly enough, on the closing track, “Someone Who Isn’t Me,” the band pays homage to their inspirations, stating, “There’s also an interpolation of the Elliott Smith song “Christian Brothers,” which is a nod to the influence Elliott has had on our songwriting.” With their latest release, MX Lonely continues to carve out their place in the Brooklyn scene, infatuating audiences with their gritty, emotive aesthetic. Keep an eye out for upcoming shows in D.C (2/9), Philly (2/10), and of course, Brooklyn (2/23).
