Royel Otis Causes a Stir With Their “Murder On The Dancefloor” Cover

If you’ve been on TikTok in the past week, you’ve probably seen the video of Royel Otis performing a live version of “Murder On The Dancefloor” by Sophie Ellis-Bextor. The wildly popular track, originally released in 2001, climbed it’s way back onto Billboard Hot 100 chart thanks to the 2023 film Saltburn, From there, the song erupted on TikTok, becoming a dance trend and soundtracking over 500k videos on the app.

Like the rest of us, Royel Otis heard this song, saw how much it was moving, and decided to cover it live on triple j’s YouTube channel. Although the video was released 5 days ago, it has already racked up over 650k views — not to mention the tens millions of views it has gotten on TikTok. Some TikTok users have voiced their adoration for aspects of the cover from Royel Otis’ intonation on particular parts of the song to their love for Australian covers in general.

All in all, Royel Otis’ cover has done nothing but propel the band and “Murder On The Dancefloor” to new heights. Hopefully the Australian band will drop their official cover to streaming services past YouTube, but if not, you can play the song on repeat from the link below.
